Every week someone asks us the same question. "How much does it actually cost to retire in Panama?" We have been answering it for over a decade, one client at a time. This month we decided to build a tool that answers it for everyone.
Why We Built It
When a prospective client contacts Panama Visa Expert, one of the first things we do is help them understand what their life in Panama will actually cost. Not the glossy brochure version. The real version, based on where they want to live, how they like to eat, whether they need a car, and what kind of healthcare coverage they want.
We have had that conversation more than 500 times. And every single time, at least one of the numbers surprises the client. Sometimes it is how affordable things are. Sometimes it is how one specific choice, like living in Costa del Este versus El Cangrejo, can change the monthly total by $700 USD or more.
We got tired of not having something to point people to. Every "Panama cost of living" article online either gives one generic number or compares Panama City to a suburb of Cleveland. Neither is useful. So we built the Panama Cost of Living Calculator, the first interactive tool that lets you choose your location, your lifestyle, and your household size, and get a real estimate tailored to you.
Here is what the data revealed.
Finding 1: Location Is Everything
Finding 01
The same lifestyle costs 40% more in Casco Viejo than in Boquete
A comfortable single retirement with mid range housing, mixed groceries, dining out a few times a week, mixed transport, basic health insurance, and moderate entertainment costs approximately $2,500 USD per month in Casco Viejo and approximately $1,760 USD per month in Boquete. Same lifestyle. 40% difference. Just because of where you choose to live.
This is the number one budgeting mistake we see. People search "Panama cost of living" and get a single figure that means nothing because it does not account for which Panama they are moving to. Panama City is not one market. It is half a dozen micro markets, each with its own price point.
The calculator covers all nine of the locations we work with most: Panama City (general), El Cangrejo, Casco Viejo, Costa del Este, Clayton, Panama Pacifico, Coronado, Bocas del Toro, and Boquete. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive option for the same lifestyle is over $1,000 USD per month.
Finding 2: The Pensionado Discount Is Real — But Most People Underestimate It
Finding 02
Pensionado Visa holders save up to $447 USD per month on a comfortable lifestyle
For a couple in Panama City with comfortable housing, mixed dining, and comprehensive entertainment, the Pensionado Visa discounts reduce monthly costs by $447 USD. That is $5,364 USD per year returned to your pocket through legally mandated government discounts.
The Pensionado Visa discounts are 20% off restaurants, 20% off utilities, 15% off healthcare procedures, and 25% off entertainment. Most people know they exist. Most people do not fully account for them in their budget planning.
When we run the calculator for clients on a moderate budget, the discounts typically save $150 to $300 USD per month. For higher spenders or couples, that climbs past $400 USD per month. Over 20 years of retirement, that is a significant number.
From Vicky's Desk
"I always tell clients to run their budget twice. Once without the Pensionado discounts and once with. The difference is usually enough to change which neighborhood they can afford, or to fund a return trip home every year. The discounts are not a nice bonus. They are a real part of your retirement income strategy."

Finding 3: Boquete Is Dramatically More Affordable Than People Think
Finding 03
A comfortable retirement in Boquete costs less than $1,800 USD per month with Pensionado discounts
Comfortable housing, mixed groceries, dining out twice a week, a mix of Uber and a personal vehicle, basic health insurance, and moderate entertainment comes to approximately $1,764 USD per month in Boquete with Pensionado discounts applied.
The cool mountain climate is the hidden cost reducer. Boquete sits at roughly 1,100 meters above sea level. You do not need air conditioning. Ever. In Panama City, air conditioning is not optional. It runs 10 to 12 hours a day and can push an electricity bill to $180 or $200 USD per month. In Boquete, that bill is $40 to $60 USD.
That single difference saves $120 to $160 USD per month, or $1,440 to $1,920 USD per year, just from not needing a single appliance.
Finding 4: El Cangrejo Punches Above Its Weight
Finding 04
El Cangrejo offers Panama City amenities at 20% below the Panama City average
A comfortable single retirement in El Cangrejo costs approximately $2,100 USD per month with Pensionado discounts. That is significantly below Costa del Este or Casco Viejo while offering the same walkability, restaurants, and access to Panama City's hospitals and services.
El Cangrejo is the neighborhood we recommend most often to clients who want to be in Panama City but do not want to pay for a premium address. It is genuinely walkable. You can reach a supermarket, pharmacy, several restaurants, a gym, and public transport on foot. You do not need a car. That alone removes $150 to $320 USD per month from your budget.
We have a full El Cangrejo neighborhood guide if you want to go deeper.
Finding 5: The Budget Floor Is Lower Than Anyone Publishes
Finding 05
A minimalist retirement in Boquete is possible on under $900 USD per month
Budget housing, cooking at home, public transport, and pay as you go healthcare in Boquete produces a calculator output of approximately $844 USD per month. We did not add a floor to the calculator because this number is real. Some expats actually live this way.
We debated whether to cap the calculator at a minimum to avoid setting unrealistic expectations. We decided not to. If someone genuinely plans to cook every meal, rent a simple place, and skip the restaurants and entertainment, $844 USD per month in Boquete is achievable. It is not comfortable by North American standards but it is real. We know people who live it.
The more useful number for most of our clients is the comfortable middle. For a single retiree with mid range housing, mixed groceries, dining out twice a week, and basic health insurance, the calculator produces results between $1,760 USD per month in Boquete and $2,400 USD per month in Panama City. That range covers the realistic retirement experience for the vast majority of the Americans and Canadians we work with.
Finding 6: Couples Save More Than They Expect
Finding 06
A couple's budget is not double a single person's budget. It is about 1.65 times as much.
The calculator uses a 65% multiplier per additional person after the first, not 100%. Housing, utilities, and transport do not double when a second person is added. Only groceries, dining, and healthcare scale proportionally. This is consistent with what we observe with client couples in practice.
This is one of the reasons couples do particularly well in Panama. The fixed costs of retirement, housing and utilities above all, are shared. The Pensionado Visa minimum for a couple is $1,250 USD per month in guaranteed pension income. With average US Social Security for a retired couple at approximately $3,200 USD per month in 2026, many couples find they can retire in Panama entirely on Social Security with money left over.

Try the Free CalculatorWhat Surprised Even Us
Building the calculator forced us to systematize 10 years of institutional knowledge. A few things stood out even to us.
First, the gap between Casco Viejo and everywhere else is larger than we expected. Casco Viejo is a UNESCO heritage district with boutique restaurants, rooftop bars, and some of the most beautiful architecture in Central America. It is also, per square meter, one of the most expensive rental markets in Panama. Clients who fall in love with it during a visit are sometimes surprised when they see the numbers side by side with El Cangrejo or Coronado.
Second, Costa del Este attracts a specific kind of client and the numbers reflect it. The luxury end of Costa del Este approaches levels you would associate with premium districts in Miami or Toronto. For clients who want that lifestyle, Panama still represents value. But it is a different conversation from the Boquete or Coronado retirement story.
Third, Bocas del Toro is underrated as a retirement destination. The Caribbean island lifestyle, the reality that no car is needed, and the genuinely relaxed pace produce a monthly budget that rivals Coronado at around $1,600 to $2,200 USD per month for a comfortable single retirement. The tradeoff is fewer services and a longer trip to Panama City's hospitals, which some clients are not comfortable with. But for the right person, Bocas is exceptional value.
What the Calculator Cannot Tell You
We want to be clear about what the calculator is and what it is not.
It is an honest estimate based on 2026 market data and real client experience. It is not a guarantee. Rent in Panama City has been rising, particularly in premium neighborhoods. What costs $1,200 USD today may cost $1,350 USD when you arrive in 12 months. We update the calculator as the market changes, but no tool can perfectly predict the future.
It also cannot account for setup costs that only happen once. Your first year in Panama will cost more than subsequent years. You will need to furnish a place, pay deposits, potentially buy a car, and cover the costs of your residency application. Those are real numbers and they matter for your planning.
The calculator also cannot tell you which location is right for you personally. That is where a conversation with our team matters. We have helped clients from 30+ countries find their right Panama. The right choice depends on your health needs, your tolerance for urban versus rural living, how important it is to be near other English speakers, and a dozen other personal factors that a calculator cannot weigh.
What the calculator can do is give you a realistic starting point and show you how your choices interact with each other. That is more than most people have when they start researching Panama.
